The International Driving Permit commonly referred to as an International driving license (IDP), is a translation of your local license to the language and regulations of your host country. In addition, this permit allows you to drive in foreign countries without having to obtain their local driver’s license. You must always have your IDP along with your national license at all times.
Driving in foreign countries has been regulated since 1926 by the United Nations through 4 international conventions. Those conventions are followed by most countries in the world. Today, two conventions cover 98% of world countries: the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention. More than 90% of all IDPs are issued under these two UN conventions. Most of these countries delegate this task to the Automobile Clubs and motoring associations. This is the reason why AIT and FIA Clubs are the world’s largest organizations issuing IDPs.
Uses of an International Driving License
Firstly, an IDP allows you to drive in any contracting country except your country of residence, provided you hold a valid domestic driving license. Contracting countries are those countries that have subscribed one or more of the UN International Conventions on Road Traffic. Makes sure you familiarize yourself with your host country’s law on useage of the IDP before you travel. For instance, in Dubai, you cannot you an IDP on a tourist visa. It is a requirement for renting a car in many countries. The Automobile Association of Kenya is the only authorized issuer of the International Driving Permits and Carnet de Passage (car passport) in Kenya.
An IDP gives you peace of mind while you are out exploring the world and even if you are not planning to drive, it can be used as a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide. Moreover, it contains your name, photo and driver information in several languages. Moreover, it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit. In no way does it diminish the obligation of the holder to conform strictly to the laws and regulations of the countries you visit.
