The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) was established by an Act of Parliament, Chapter 469 of the laws of Kenya, which became effective on 1st July 1995. KRA is charged with collecting revenue on behalf of the government of Kenya.
The core functions of the Authority are to: –
- Assess, collect and account for all revenues in accordance with the written laws and the specified provisions of the written laws.
- Advise on matters relating to the administration of, and collection of revenue under the written laws or the specified provisions of the written laws.
- Perform such other functions in relation to revenue as the Minster may direct.
Therefore, every individual in Kenya possessing a PIN must file their returns, whether a company or a natural person. If you or your firm doesn’t make money in the period of income, you should still file returns, but in this case, nil. That is why knowing how to file nil returns on the iTax portal is beneficial.
What’s a nil return?
We file nil income tax returns to show KRA that you fall below the taxable income and therefore you did not pay taxes during the year.
When should I file KRA Nil Returns?
In Kenya, you are required to your returns annually. Therefore, returns can be either be income tax earned through employment or rental income through the properties you own.

How do I file my KRA Nil Returns online?
Log on to KRA’s iTax portal.
You will have to key in your KRA Pin and the click continue.
After that, you will key in your password and the security validation.
Once you have logged in you click on the returns drop down tab and select as shown below.
Once in the Nil returns page. It will auto-select the type and the Pin. All you have to do is to select on Income tax- resident individual option as shown below and then click on next.
Once you have done all this. The next page will ask you to confirm your PIN and wife’s PIN (optional) and the period in which your filing Nil returns as shown below.
Once you hit the submit button and everything is successful, you will receive a return receipt with an acknowledgement number. You can download this form and preserve it as evidence of filing. And that is all you need to file KRA Nil Returns online.
